I recently attended the Wish Want Wear pop up sale at BuyMyWardrobe’s treasure trove boutique in Marylebone. An avid BuymyWardrobe fan, I was excited to shop the designer dresses for rent on sale that evening and learn more about Wish Want Wear. Glass of bubbly in hand, I set about browsing the racks and choosing my favourite designer dresses to try on.

Wish Want Wear is a simple concept that lends itself to the growing trend of renting over buying.  The idea was conceived by 3 genius women who loved dressing up but found their shopping habits getting a little out of control (sound familiar?). This clever trio created a designer dresses for rent site for women to hire on trend designer dresses for those all important events and return when the party’s over.  Not only are the dresses a fraction of the buy cost, they’re all affordable to the likes of you and me.  We likey.  Very muchey.

I met one of the Wish Want Wear Co-Founders, Suruchi Bhargava, and we got chatting about our love of posh frocks. In order to provide such a diverse range for everyone to find their ‘something special’, they constantly research trends and look at what has historically proven popular. From Temperley to Tibi, they offer all the big names for every occasion you can think of. I love their ‘Just Because’ selection. I also met Buymywardrobe’s lovely PR manager, Alex Churton, who showed me the beautiful dress she wore to Una Healy’s summer wedding – sorry, couldn’t resist a bit of name dropping! I was hit by a sudden attack of  dress envy.

Wish Want Wear’s service replaces the stress element of hunting down that perfect dress with general excitement and giddiness. It marks the end of time-consuming googling, narrowing down dresses you think might work. No more frantic shopping trips doing the usual department store rounds,  buying a pricey Karen Millen dress telling yourself you’ll wear again but never do.  It also does away with buying dresses that no longer fit. My nearest charity shop has housed a good selection of mine over the years. The beauty of this designer dresses for rent service is that its affordable luxury you don’t have to leave your living room to get your hands on. What more could a girl want?

The process is so simple even my 6-year-old god-daughter could work it.  You browse their catalogue (always a pleasure, never a chore), select your size and the dates you want to rent and a collection of dresses magically appears before your very eyes.  The hard part is choosing which you like best. And it’s not just dresses, you can hire all the accessories as well. After the event, you simply return it in the envelope provided – you don’t even have to clean it. I told you it was genius!

Of course the evening wouldn’t have been complete if I left empty-handed. I was chuffed to bits with my Milly New York Kerstin Cocktail dress – a very elegant mix of SJP meets Studio 54.  Its my official 2012 Christmas party dress but I’m already finding excuses to wear it sooner.

Just imagining wearing one of their rental dresses gives me goosebumps so I can’t wait until I actually do. And how refreshing to know you won’t bump into someone wearing the same.  That’s another tick in the box for me. It makes me want to invent events to go just so I can hire more! Their motto is ‘hire it, love it, return it’. In Jerry Maguire speak, they had me at ‘hire’.
